NORTH RICHLAND HILLS, Texas (July 16)- The Texas Brahmas of the Central Hockey League (CHL) stacked their roster Friday as they announced the signing of defenseman Nick Toneys and forward Jeff Hazelwood for the 2010-11 campaign.
Toneys arrives to Texas following a season guarding the blueline with the Nottingham Panthers of the EIHL (Elite Ice Hockey League) in Europe. In 54 games with the Panthers, the Waupaca, WI native netted a career high three goals as well as picking up seven assists and 82 penalty minutes. Prior to heading overseas Toneys played a season in the ECHL (East Coast Hockey League) with the Phoenix Roadrunners and Augusta Lynx and two seasons with the Kalamazoo Wings in the UHL. As a professional the 6-foot-2 defenseman has 30 points (6 G, 24 A) and 192 penalty minutes in 174 games played.
Prior to playing professionally, Toneys played two seasons at Michigan Tech and two seasons at St. Norbert College, Brahmas forward Jason Deitsch’s alma mater. In 90 NCAA games the newest Brahma defenseman had 20 points (5 G, 15 A) and 48 penalty minutes.
Hazelwood, 24, joins the Brahmas after spending his rookie season with the Las Vegas Wranglers (ECHL) last year. The speedy forward accumulated 20 points (8 G, 12 A) in 27 games played. Before taking his game to the professional level, Hazelwood was a student athlete at St. Norbert College (2005-07) and Curry College (2007-09). In his junior and senior year at Curry College, Hazelwood posted 93 points (43 G, 50 A) earning him the ECAC Northeast “Player of the Year” award in 2009.
“It’s great to bring in young guys early in the season as we can help them develop,” Brahmas Head Coach Dan Wildfong said regarding his newest signings. “Nick will be a solid addition to our blueline and with Jeff’s offensive reputation; I believe our fans will have a great team to look forward to watching come October.”
The addition of Toneys and Hazelwood boost the Brahmas 2010-11 roster to six announced players as they join Jason Deitsch, Jim Burichin, Nathan Saunders and Ryan McLeod.
