BRAHMAS WEEKLY UPDATE
FORT WORTH IN FIFTH PLACE AT HALF-WAY POINT
FORT WORTH, Texas (January 7) - The Fort Worth Brahmas (17-12-4) earned all of six possible points last week, going 3-0-0 in the team’s three games. The weekend’s two-game sweep at the Fort Worth Convention Center improved the Brahmas’ record downtown to 5-0-0. There are four games on the docket this week (two at home and two on the road), including three versus the cross-town rival Allen Americans.
At the half-way point of the season, the Brahmas currently stand in fifth place, but trail the Missouri Mavericks by only two points for third. Fort Worth has the best home record in the Central Hockey League at 13-2-4, but 19 of the team’s 33 remaining games will be on the road.
The Brahmas brought in the new year with a come-from-behind victory over the Wichita Thunder at the NYTEX Sports Centre. Facing a 2-1 deficit after 20 minutes of play, Fort Worth scored three unanswered goals and shut down the Thunder scoring attack to come away with a 4-2 win. Calin Wild, Shawn Szydlowski and Austin Mayer notched the unanswered goals. Tomas Klempa, the team’s leading scorer this season, scored the team’s first goal.
The Brahmas opened the weekend series at the Fort Worth Convention Center with a nail-biter versus the Rapid City Rush Friday night. The game remained scoreless through the first two periods before Adam Hogg deflected Ross Rouleau’s slapshot from the point past Rush netminder Danny Battochio just 36 second into the third. Krsitofer Westblom stopped all 23 shots he faced, earning his eighth win and CHL-leading third shutout this season. For Hogg, his lone score of the game was his first game-winning goal of the year after leading the team in 2011-2012 with nine GWGs.
Fort Worth kept the momentum going Saturday with a convincing 6-3 victory over the Tulsa Oilers. The Brahmas opened a 2-1 lead in the first period, getting goals from the franchise’s all-time leading scorer, Chad Woollard, and the newest member of the club, John Snowden. Snowden added another goal in the second, and the Brahmas ran away with the contest in the third. Hogg, Woollard and Wild each found the back of the net in the final frame, completing a stretch of five unanswered goals that lasted 48:14 of game time. Tulsa tacked on two scores in the final three and a half minutes, but the Brahmas’ lead was too much to overcome. The line of Woollard, Snowden and Hogg proved to be the difference in the game as the three forwards combined to score five of the six goals.
The Brahmas have four games this week, including three straight versus the Allen Americans. The teams will meet at the NYTEX Sports Centre in North Richland Hills Tuesday, January 8 at 7:00pm and Saturday, January 12 at 7:30pm. They will also play at the Allen Event Center Friday, January 11 at 7:05pm. The Brahmas are 1-3-1 versus the Americans this season.
Fort Worth will also travel to Tulsa to take on the Oilers Sunday, January 13 at 4:05pm. The Brahmas are 6-1-1 against Tulsa this season, including five straight wins.
